WHAT ARE PROJECTS?
Every quarter, IARC hosts 5 projects (1 hosted by each studio) and various in-house design competitions.
Projects vary in scale and scope but can include design competitions, community design initiatives, on-campus installations, research or publication efforts, and collaborations with other clubs or departments.
As a member, we encourage you to take a role in these projects — no matter how big or small!
PURPOSE OF PROJECTS
IARC projects are hands-on, student-led opportunities that allow members to explore real-world design, research, and community engagement beyond the classroom. They provide space to:
Collaborate with students across class years and majors
Develop and apply design and leadership skills
Explore topics outside your studio curriculum
Build your portfolio and resume with meaningful work
TEAM ROLES
Each project team is structured with multiple roles, such as:
Project Managers
Project Leads
Primary Designers
Supporting Designers
Affiliate Designers
and more!
Projects are a great way for members to take on leadership positions during their time as a member, regardless of member tier. You can also take on less time-
demanding roles but still gain experience!
JOINING A PROJECT
Projects are open to all IARC members, regardless of major or class year.
Members may join any project, not just those hosted by their studio.
At the start of each quarter, open applications are released (Week 1–3) for each project.
Members may apply to up to two projects, and can only hold one major role (Director, Principal, or Lead) across all projects.
Supporting Designers may participate on multiple projects (maximum of 3).
APPLICATION PROCESS
Projects will be announced on Tuesday of Week 2 and during the first Monthly Meeting of the quarter.
Project applications are shared via email, Discord, and Instagram during Week 2.
Applications close on the Sunday before Week 3.
Project Directors and Executive Board will review applications and build teams based on experience, interest, and balance.
Teams are announced by Tuesday of Week 3.
LATE/REMOTE APPLYING
Members may join projects as Supporting Designers or Affiliate Designers after the quarter begins.
Larger roles (Lead and above) are not assigned after Week 3, to ensure team stability.
Directors may open specific tasks or subprojects for sign-up throughout the quarter.
Members located in Lacoste for the quarter are still eligible to participate on any level!
TIME COMMITMENT
Each project sets its own meeting schedule, typically 1–2 hours per week.
Members in leadership roles are expected to communicate actively, meet deadlines, and attend meetings consistently.
Supporting and affiliate designers may participate more flexibly but should stay in communication.
Members who fail to remain active or in communication may be asked to step down from their design position by the Projext Director, Project Manager, or the Executive Board.
